Intro · Machine Vending

I went to Japan for the first time in the autumn of 2024, and the following photos of vending machines are from that trip. Vending machines are only one of many interesting things in Japan, so it may seem weird to focus only on them, but I had a few reasons that made me want to do it.

I generally don't like taking photos on trips, because it takes time away from me enjoying the trip and sights themselves. I also don't want to be in the way of people by stopping to take photos, so I often feel uncomfortable while taking them. However, these days I try to take more photos, so I can use them to remember and tell my friends and family about my trips.

I got the idea of taking pictures of specifically vending machines from reading the manga version of "Three Days of Happiness". I hoped this would give me opportunities to take more photos, helping me remember more of the trip.

I aimed to take photos of interesting machines themselves, and also scenes that were interesting or famous on their own but framed in a way that it contains a vending machine as well. I wanted to have a "vending machine of the day" for each day of the trip, but sometimes I include more when I couldn't decide on a single one. Where warranted, I tried to do a little bit of research as well in hopes of fun facts related to the specific photos.

私初めて日本に行ったことは２０２４年の秋だった。下の写真はその旅行で撮った自販機の写真だ。自動販売機は多くの面白い事のうちの1つだけで、その1つだけに焦点を当てるのは変だと思われるかもしれないけど、理由はいくつかあった。

普段は旅行中に写真撮るのが好きじゃない。それは旅行を楽しむ時間を奪うと思うからだ。その上にたくさんの人がいると、撮影は迷惑をかけると思うから、撮ると恥ずかしくて気まずく感じる。しかし、昨今友達や家族に旅行が語れるように、より多くの写真を撮るようにしている。

自販機の写真を撮るという思いつきは「三日間の幸福」という小説から来た。このように自販機の写真を撮ったら、もっと写真を撮るきっかけになるかもしれないと思った。そして多くの写真を撮ったら、旅行のことをよく思い出ったり、語ったりできるようになる。

写真は珍しい自販機だけじゃなくて、有名な場所や美しい景色の写真に自販機が写るようにアレンジできたら、その写真も撮るようにした。旅行の毎日に、その日の自販機の写真を選ぶことにしていたけど、面白い写真が何枚もあって選べない場合は、もう1枚の写真も入れた。日の自販機をちょっと調べて、私にとって面白い情報を見つけたら、その情報も付け加えた。
